Bungay is the nearest town to The Old Rectory Cottage. Officially recognised as a Conservation Area by English Heritage it is an attractive and thriving market town situated in a loop of the beautiful river Waveney.

Bungay boasts many attractions – The ancient Buttercross, an attractive historic town centre, its own theatre and a host of “one off” events. – a walk in the town will expose many of its hidden treasures – it has many individual and specialist shops to browse. Bungay is also lucky to have many fine restaurants, coffee shops, cafes and ancient Inns.

Bungay also boasts – A Sweet For You, which offers over 100 jars of old-fashioned sweets – truly a journey back in time!

The adjacent plaque commemorates the Great Fire of Bungay This was a devastating fire that swept through the market town of Bungay in 1688. The blaze destroyed a large part of the town, including many homes and businesses, causing significant hardship for local residents.

Although the town was rebuilt, the fire had a lasting impact on Bungay’s development and architecture. Today, the event is remembered as one of the most serious disasters in the town’s history and highlights the dangers of fire in densely built communities before modern firefighting methods.
